Online Seminar Series on Data Protection Law – 23 to 26 May 2022
The ICEL is delighted to announce that it will be holding an online seminar series on Data Protection Law between 23 and 26 May 2022.
Tickets for the entire seminar series are available for €100 here and to members for €70 here. Pupil barrristers and trainee solicitors may purchase a ticket for the entire seminar series here. The first seminar will consider “Regulatory Structures and Fines.” Topics addressed will include the issues raised by the WhatsApp case, in which the powers of the Data Protection Commission to impose administrative fines have been challenged, the decision of the Supreme Court in Zalewski, and the provisions of the GDPR on administrative fines. The seminar will take place on 23 May 2022 from 1pm until 2pm. Speakers at this seminar will include Remy Farrell SC (Law Library) and Stephen Brittain BL (Law Library) and Fleur O’Shea (Data Protection Commission). The second seminar will consider “the Decision in Dwyer,” in which the CJEU held that EU law precludes the general and indiscriminate retention of electronic traffic and location data for the purposes of combating serious crimes. The panel will consider the significance of this decision from the point of view of the rights of data subjects, the prevention of serious crimes, and criminal procedure. The seminar will take place on 24 May 2022 from 1pm to 2pm. Speakers at this seminar will include Paul Gallagher SC (Attorney General of Ireland), Dr Róisín Costello BL (DCU), Professor TJ McIntyre (UCD and Digital Rights Ireland), and Mark Lynam BL (Law Library). The third seminar will consider “Compensation”. In particular, the panel will consider the impact of Article 82 GDPR, which has considerably expanded the circumstances in which compensation will be available for breaches of data protection law. Panellists will consider both the substantive and procedural aspects of bringing or defending a claim under Article 82 GDPR. The seminar will take place on 25 May 2022 from 1pm to 2pm.
