70 years of EU law: A union for its citizens – Panel event with Daniel Calleja Crespo, Director-General, European Commission Legal Service
The Irish Centre for European Law, in partnership with the European Commission Representation in Ireland, is hosting an event marking 70 years of EU Law.
Time: 17:30 on Thursday 25 May 2023, followed by a reception at 18:45.
Venue: European Commission Representation in Ireland, Europe House, 12-14 Mount Street Lower, Dublin 2, D02 W710.
The event will be opened by Barbara Nolan, Head of the European Commission Representation in Ireland and chaired by the Hon. Ms Justice Niamh Hyland.
The speakers will be:
- Daniel Calleja Crespo, Director-General of the European Commission Legal Service who will launch a new book 70 years of EU law and discuss the development of EU law and the role of the European Commission Legal Service in that regard;
- Karen Banks, former Deputy Director-General of the Commission Legal Service who will discuss Commission infringement proceedings as a driver in the development of EU law;
- Professor Gavin Barrett of UCD Sutherland School of Law on the practical benefits of EU law for the citizen.
The Attorney General Rossa Fanning SC will deliver brief closing remarks at the end of the event.
The event will be an opportunity for legal practitioners and those with an interest in the EU to reflect on the role of EU law in our society and economy.
